All You Need To Know about Calf health

It would be futile to treat calves for parasites, the cause of frostbite in the former calves. when the cause of the current case of washings is related to diet. Use medication if you are sure of the cause of the symptoms. Using the wrong medicine can also worsen the condition or be harmful to the calf.

However, vaccination is primarily aimed at preventing disease. Discuss with your veterinarian which vaccinations make sense for your stock. In addition to vaccination, ensuring clean living conditions with adequate ventilation has been identified as an important preventive measure.

Nutrition is very important for sick calf fitness

Calves need the energy to fight disease and maintaining proper energy levels requires calves that are given proper nutrition. Do whatever you can to get the calves to eat.

Consider taking a supplement that provides the essential vitamins and protein a sick calf needs to maintain its strength and boost its immune system. Bottle or tube feedings may be necessary if a sick calf won't eat, but generally, calves should not be force-fed unless directed by a veterinarian.

Dehydration is also a major problem in sick calves and is ultimately the leading cause of disease-related deaths. A basic but important step in treating and preventing dehydration is to make sure you have enough clean water.

To treat severely dehydrated calves who may be at risk (beware of sunken eyes and dry nose/mouth), oral hydration solutions can be mixed and given by bottle or gavage if the calf refuses to drink. Some simple solutions add sodium or glucose.
